BARNET head of coaching Dick Schreuder had an unforgettable start to his new career after suffering a serious ankle injury on his first day with Edgar Davids’ side.
Schreuder, who was lured away from his previous job as manager of Dutch amateur side SDV Barneveld in June, tore his ankle ligaments after turning awkwardly on the training field.
Although Schreuder has since returned to his homeland to undergo an operation, Barnet assistant manager Ulrich Landvreugd is confident his absence will not severely disrupt preparations ahead of the new season.
“It was the worst first day ever for him,” said Landvreugd.
“He returned back to Holland at the weekend. He had an operation scheduled for Thursday here in England, but it was possible to get it done quicker in Holland and I think he’ll return by next Monday.”
“It’s a little bit of shame because we have some trialists this week and we are going to miss an extra pair of eyes, but when he returns he should be able to play a full part in things.”
Schreuder, 41, began his playing career at PSV Eindhoven where Brazilian striker-turned-politician Romario was one of his teammates.
He left PSV in 1993 in search of first-team football and played for a number of clubs in Holland before a brief playing stint at Stoke City in the late nineties.
After just two appearances for the Potters, Schreuder moved back to his homeland to play for Helmond Sport before ending his playing days at Go Ahead Eagles.
His arrival at Barnet completes an all-Dutch coaching setup for the Bees and Landvreugd believes his straight-talking compatriot will be a welcome addition to the club.
“Edgar and I have known Dick for a very long time,” explained Landvreugd.
“Dick is the same age as us and when we were young we played against him.
“In the last few years he has improved himself as a trainer in Holland and that’s why he is here with us to give us that little bit extra.
“He’s someone we can have good and open discussions with. Everyone has their own opinion and we always discuss how we want to train, but Edgar will always make the final decision on how we are going to do things.”
