Phil Babb has stressed the importance of Hayes & Yeading getting into their new ground as quickly as possible.

The club recently announced they will be playing at Maidenhead’s York Road until their own stadium is completed in Beaconsfield Road.

Babb concurs with Tony O’Driscoll’s assessment in last week’s Gazette that Maidenhead will be a more suitable venue than the current deal in place with Woking.

However, the former Liverpool defender insists the club owes it to the fans to return home sooner rather than later.

He said: “Is it a good thing that we’re ground sharing? Ultimately not really, but we really want to get into a home ground as quickly as possible – that’s the most important thing.

“Maidenhead is a lot closer to Hayes.

“It’s more local. It’s only 20 miles from Hayes, whereas Woking is probably double that.

“Hopefully we are going to try and get into our stadium next season and that’s what we are all aiming for.

"At non-league level you need a fan base and the more fans you have the more successful you tend to be because of the revenue streams.

“The fans that do turn up week in week out are fantastic. They make an awful lot of noise, even if there’s only 12 of them at times. They still sing and they still support the club, so we thank them.

“The lads appreciate them so hopefully we won’t give them as much of a heart attack this season as they had toward the back end of last season.”

Hayes & Yeading were last night went down 1-0 at Whitehawk, hot on the heels of a creditable 1-1 draw with table-topping Eastleigh on Saturday.
