Dean Smith believes that Aston Villa signing John Terry is a good deal for the Villans, as well as the Championship.

Steve Bruce's side made the most high profile signing of the summer when they convinced the Chelsea legend and former England captain to move to the west Midlands.

Smith, who supports Villa, admitted it was a surprise but believes it to be a good deal for the club.

The Brentford head coach said: “I think it's a good move for Aston Villa and John Terry. It surprised a lot of us. We saw him going to a Swansea or Bournemouth.

“He said he didn't want to play against Chelsea and we have to respect that.

“I think one of the big things Steve Bruce said about his leadership qualities going into the dressing room and that'd be a big boost for any club at any level.”

The signing of Terry can also have a positive impact on Brentford and inspire the younger players to earn a chance to line up against one of the country's leading defenders of the last 15 years.

Smith added: “It can have a positive impact here. I've had the pleasure of meeting John and chatting to him a couple of times as I had his brother (Paul).

“He's a personable person and you can see why people follow him. His professionalism has never been under question and he'll invigorate players at Aston Villa.”
