Martin Allen has picked out Charlie Austin as QPR's potential match winner in their Championship play-off final against Derby County today.

Allen started his playing career at QPR and played in their midfield for five years, including the 1986 Milk Cup final defeat to Oxford United at Wembley .

The Barnet manager believes his former side will have a tough time again at Wembley, but hopes the The Rs' wily know-how will triumph over Derby's youthful exuberance.

Hope: Allen is praying for a QPR win at Wemley

He said: “I hope QPR do it but it will be very difficult for them, although they have a potential match winner in Charlie Austin.

“Derby are energetic and have a lot of good players. The energy and athleticism of the Derby squad is fantastic, but QPR have the more experienced players.

“The fact Steve McLaren used to be at QPR too makes it a fascinating game. I know him from his time in charge at Nottingham Forest, when I was at Notts County.

A good man: Allen knows Steve McLaren from their days together in Nottingham

“I am delighted for Steve getting his career back on track as he's a good man who probably got England job too early, but I still hope QPR win.

“I know Harry Redknapp too, and he is a real character, a real personality who always makes me laugh. He has really revived QPR's fortunes.”
