Kelle Roos is proving an instant hit with AFC Wimbledon fans - but he has already given one teammate the hump.

The giant Dutch keeper made a big impression in the 4-1 win against Luton at the weekend, prompted cries of R-oooooos from the massed ranks of Wombles’ supporters.

But according to boss Neal Ardley, leading scorer Lyle Taylor was ready to send him back to parent club Derby or even right across the channel after failing to find a way past the 23-year-old in a training game.

“Roos is hard to beat even in training,” laughed Ardley. “Lyle Taylor the other day told him to clear off back to Holland – he used different words – because we were having a seven-a-side and everything Lyle hit was going in until Kelle managed to save it.

Had the hump: Lyle Taylor

“So Lyle got the hump as he always does.”

For Ardley, such a showing demonstrates how motivated Roos is to make the most of the opportunity afforded him by this time away from Pride Park where he has found himself down the pecking order behind Scott Carson and Lee Grant.

Hence he has had no hesitation in pitching him straight into the League Two playoff scrap at James Shea’s expense.

“Kelle has worked with the boys and he is so driven,” he added

“He knows how he wants things done, so he has come in and straight away the boys have taken to him.

“Just the sheer size of him he uses every part of his body to keep the ball out of the goal. I’m delighted for him as I thought he had an excellent debut.”
