AFC Wimbledon are heading to Wembley for the first time since the Phoenix club rose from the ashes following a 3-2 aggregate win over Accrington Stanley.

The Dons will battle Plymouth Argyle under the arch in a bid to reach League One in the play-off final in north west London on Bank Holiday Monday.

It was a rollercoaster ride for the travelling Dons supporters at Accrington as they had to watch on in horror as Stanley overturned the 1-0 deficit from the first leg.

Josh Windass’ penalty and a Piero Mingoia stunner had seen the home side put one foot in the national stadium as they took a 2-1 lead outright.

However, substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa and the ever-reliable Lyle Taylor came up with the goods to send the visitors through after extra-time at the Crown Ground.

Dons hero Taylor said: “I can’t put it into words but you can see what it means to the fans. We’re doing it for them. This is the dream for the club and we’ve got there.

“It’s not just me it’s the team. He [Bayo Akinfenwa] is a mountain. You can’t play against him and he’s been brilliant for me.

“If only people knew what he’d done for me behind the scenes for me this year then they’d understand.”
