The first half was an error-strewn, cagey affair and not the spectacle the occasion deserved, although AFC Wimbledon survived two narrow escapes.

Matt Tubbs fizzed a shot past James Shea's left-hand post and Maxime Biamou clipped the crossbar with a toepoke, having latched on to a through ball and brushed off a Danny Bulman shove.

The game began to come to the boil after half-time as Andy Barcham's high cross nearly sneaked under the bar while at the other end, Shea made a good low save from a Biamou effort in the 61st minute.

Neal Ardley's side assumed control of the game in the second half and had a good penalty shout turned down for a challenge on Barry Fuller.

Armed: Tom Elliott (L) gets Ross Worner all over him

Former Dons keeper Ross Worner came to United's rescue in injury time as he saved Paul Robinson's downward header from a corner. He had turned a Tom Elliott around the post moments before.

Now for three things we learnt from the cup tie at Gander Green Lane.

See you in the week

A draw was probably a fair result from a game that never really reached the heights the pre-match build up had perhaps unrealistically imposed.

AFC haven't always started games well of late and could have gone behind in the first half. They weren't able to get Lyle Taylor and Tom Elliott the sort of service they were after at any stage.

Neal Ardley looked happy to settle with the replay- leaving Dom Poleon and Tyrone Barnett on the bench- but they stayed solid and could have nicked it in injury-time.

Close Sheave

James Shea continued his fine form in goal and saved a well-struck effort from Biamou in the second half that was the closest Sutton came.

Former United man Darius Charles was the lynchpin at the back while Andy Barcham's direct dribbling caused problems at times.

The fact that Taylor and Elliott weren't really able to get into the game will be a cause for regret for the Dons.

Late and nearly great

The turning point was Biamou's shot in the first half that cannoned off the bar and over. The fact he lay on the ground for so long after his shot sailed over showed that he knew how important the chance was.

Another key moment was Robinson's header in injury time that was well-saved by Worner and nearly fell for Taylor at the second attempt.

Wimbledon have another chance to book their first ever fourth round appearance in the replay at Kingsmeadow.
