Beware a Bury backlash is the war cry from AFC Wimbledon’s Paul Robinson ahead of Saturday’s League One clash at Kingsmeadow

The battle for league points represents the fourth of a tetralogy of meetings between the sides in a month – a saga the Wombles have had the better of so far.

Neal Ardley’s men won the reverse league fixture before battling back from 2-0 down at Gigg Lane to force an FA Replay they won emphatically 5-0 on Tuesday night.

Experienced defender Robinson knows how much the latest setback will have hurt the Shakers, who parted company with David Flitcroft in the wake of Tuesday's result, but for that reason he expects them to come out swinging on Saturday.

“They will really hurt after this, so there will be a backlash and we’ll have to be ready for it,” he said.

“That is where we have to make sure we do everything right between now and then so come Saturday we understand it is a new day and a new game.

“The past results are irrelevant and what is on offer is three points in the league.”

Dominic Poleon celebrates

Former Millwall man Robinson played a big part in the cup progress, scoring the first and turning provider to lay on the third in first-half stoppage time for Dominic Poleon.

“The assist was about fancying Dom to score more than I fancied myself,” he laughed.

“But the first goal was important because they started quite well, but obviously in the run of form they are in they need something to cling to.

“The first goal was enough to put them on the back foot.”

While wary of the Shakers’ potential for a revenge mission, Robinson acknowledged Tuesday leaves Dons holding the psychological cards.

And he also believes you can’t underestimate the impact of travelling backwards and forwards to London with such a short turnaround.

“Psychologically it is difficult for them having lost 5-0 and the travelling is a factor too,” he added.

“We have done that travelling ourselves for the league game and the first cup tie, so we know what a journey it is. It is a long couple of days, especially if you don’t get anything out of the games.

“We will have to make sure they do feel that and we use it to our advantage.”
