Ian Holloway had an amusing theory as to how AFC Wimbledon hero Adebayo Akinfenwa got his huge frame - and he might not be far wrong.

The Beast rescued the Dons from the brink of elimination from the League Two play-offs at Accrington Stanley on Wednesday night with a powerful header.

That sparked a stunning Wimbledon revival at the Crown Ground as Lyle Taylor netted in an extra-time to send the south west Londoners through to Wembley.

Former QPR manager Holloway, working for Sky Sports as a pundit on the night, was particularly impressed by the performance of Akinfenwa in Lancashire.

Having praised the big man, recognised as the world’s strongest footballer by FIFA, Holloway added: “He eats a bit I imagine. I heard he had a twin and he ate him."

It sent Holloway’s co-presenter Scott Minto into fits of laughter in the studio as the pair struggled to regain their composure in the wake of the 3-2 victory.

Akifenwa already has a cult following in the football world and his brilliant response to Holloway’s remark is pure banter from the Dons striker.

Don’t fill up too much Bayo, you’ve got a Wembley final coming up on May 30!

“It’s massive,” Akinfenwa said of the achievement as he prepares to grace the famous turf. “It’s what dreams are made of.

“It means so much to everyone affiliated with AFC Wimbledon. We’re not here just to make up the numbers, we want to go on and win this now.”

“Lyle has been great all season and if you give him an opportunity you know he’ll score. He deserves all the praise because it was a massive goal. We’re going to Wembley.”

He’ll be hoping to make it third time lucky at the national stadium with the Dons after two previous failings.

The veteran striker missed a spot kick when Swansea lost the League One play-off final on penalties to Barnsley in 2006.

He was on the losing side again when Northampton were beaten 3-0 by Bradford in the League Two final seven years later.
