AFC Wimbledon believe a surge in season ticket sales this summer strengthens their case for a return to Plough Lane.

The Dons are looking to build a 20,000-seater stadium, with an initial capacity of up to 11,000, on a site which was home to stock car and greyhound racing.

Plans for the site, which also incorporate 602 flats, parking, shops and a fitness centre, were approved by Merton Borough Council in December.

However, former Mayor of London Boris Johnson made the controversial decision to call in the application before stepping down from his role and handing power to Sadiq Khan.

A new consultation process will now begin as Khan acts as the local planning authority to decide the fate of Plough Lane.

New Mayor Khan, in his previous role as Tooting MP, expressed concerns about the development of the site and wrote to chief executive Erik Samuelson.

It has led to some concern among Dons fans that the deal may fall through, although last month’s sale of Kingsmeadow to Chelsea was another boost to the cause.

Chelsea want to use the ground for their youth and ladies' teams and the money raised from the deal is being used to fund the push for a Plough Lane return.

AFC Wimbledon remain confident they will be able to move into the new stadium in their spiritual home borough in time for the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

Monday’s announcement of the news that 2,900 season tickets had already been sold for next season following the club’s promotion to League One.

That represents a record total for Wimbledon with just five weeks to go before the big kick-off in their first campaign as a third tier phoenix club.

Due to the high demand, the Dons made additional seats available in the John Green Stand for season ticket applicants, but say they are still likely to be oversubscribed.

For this reason, AFC Wimbledon are not taking any further applications for season tickets, with the club insisting the huge demand justifies their need for a bigger ground.

The dream: AFC Wimbledon fans want a return to Plough Lane

Mike Berry, who carries out a vital role at the club by auditing season ticket payments from supporters, said: “Once again, the process has been daunting, but registering all the ST applications will be completed this week.

“I would ask fans to be patient over the next couple of weeks and not to contact the club for updates. From next week, fans who have applied for seats or a move will be contacted.

“Some will be disappointed as the demand is greater than the available seats, but it shows that our move back to Wimbledon is essential to satisfy the demands to watch our team.

“Though the increase in numbers is a challenge, it is also exciting as the prospect of more fans regularly attending games as a result of our promotion is very pleasing.”

AFC Wimbledon begin their pre-season fixtures campaign at Dover on Tuesday week (July 12) before making the trip to Margate on Saturday, July 16. The first home game of the schedule is the visit of Reading a week later.
