AFC Wimbledon’s Dominic Poleon hopes his luminous pink boots will make a different kind of statement.

Coloured boots are the rule not the exception these days with strikers in particular perhaps renowned for wearing more garish ones than most in a bid to stand-out from the crowd.

But for Wombles’ new-boy Poleon it is about family memories and standing up rather than standing out – to one of Britain’s biggest killers.

Cancer has darkened the former Leeds man’s family doorstep more than once, so when he stumbled across his pink footwear he grabbed the chance to don them in the hope of flagging up work against the disease.

“The boots are about cancer research,” he said.

“There has been some cancer in my family and a few years ago my nan died of it as well.

“So I’ve donated to cancer research in the past and then when the pink boots came I just though you know what I’ll just get them.

“There is nothing else to it apart from that. I thought it would be a nice dedication to my family and the charity.”

Poleon will hope, boots and all, he has done enough to be part of The Dons’ League One debut in Saturday’s curtain-raiser away to Walsall.
