Dominic Poleon has a touch of Jermaine Defoe about him according to AFC Wimbledon teammate George Francomb.

The summer signing from Oldham wrote himself into Wombles’ folklore by bagging a 90th minute winner against Chesterfield on Saturday – securing Dons’ first victory at League One level.

His unerring drive into the bottom corner after coming off the bench as a late substitute put Francomb in mind of former England man Defoe, who has made a career of such finishes for the likes of West Ham, Tottenham and now Sunderland.

“Dom has that finish in him like a Jermaine Defoe finish with that short back-lift and lovely little drive into the bottom corner," he said.

“We were going wild on the bench when Dom smashed that in. We needed that win to get us going and lift us off the bottom.”

Tottenham legend: Jermain Defoe

Poleon’s winner against the Spireites came hot on the heels of his double against Swansea’s U23s in the Football League Trophy last Tuesday.

Boss Neal Ardley admits the former Chelsea youth, now 22 is making a strong case for a starting shirt.

“We have worked hard to get Dominic up to speed and with the U21 games and in midweek I think he has five goals in three games, so he is certainly putting me under a bit more pressure to pick him,” he said.

The one blot on the landscape of their precious first win was a soft goal conceded at a set piece.

Ardley knows this is something of an on-going theme for his side this term and admits their League One destiny will hinge on being able to cut out such errors.

“I think our season will be defined by not doing stupid things defensively,” he added.

“Today we have conceded from another set piece and if we keep doing that we will struggle.

“They put a lot of people in the six-yard box and their big man Evatt was blocking our keeper so he can’t move and is almost being forced back into his goal, trying to come for the cross but he can’t.

“So you just have to expect the players who are marking to make sure no-one gets a header on goal.

“We have to take responsibility for that individually and make sure if it happens again they don’t get any joy from it.”
