Sterling gives us hope for the future

The young Brent winger kept going throughout and was lively despite being moved out to the right to accommodate Rooney in the centre. It was obvious the Uruguay players were scared of his pace and tried to nullify that threat by doubling up on the Liverpool player.

England's slow build-up at times meant Sterling wasn't used as effectively as he could have been - something that needs to addressed in the future - and he eventually faded in the second half before being replaced.

However, once again there was enough there to believe that Sterling can become an influential member of this young team.

Cahill can be England's rock at the back

He may have been caught out for Mario Balotelli's goal against Italy but the Chelsea man showed his strength around what at times has been a shaky England defence throughout the tournament.

Despite having the fearsome strikeforce of Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez he was brave in the tackle, putting in a series of crucial blocks especially when the Three Lions' goal came under threat early in the second half.

Cahill should be a mainstay in the defence for years to come.

Chelsea should break the bank to sign Luis Suarez

Jose Mourinho has made it no secret that the reason he felt the Blues did not win the Premier League was because of his misfiring strikers. While a deal for Diego Costa is all but done, the Spanish striker has failed to shine on the biggest stage of all.

The same can't be said for Suarez. Even though he was not fully fit he proved the difference in this match and there is no question he would do the same at Stamford Bridge.

Mr Abramovich get the cheque book out and make Liverpool an offer they can't refuse.

Hodgson is right to give youth a chance

England may have suffered two defeats - but their young guns have actually been a breath of fresh air, in particularly Raheem Sterling as mentioned earlier.

What was a shame last night was that despite the less hot, humid conditions they experienced in Manaus, England could not put in the same level of performance against the Uruguay as they did against Italy.

But this is a learning curve for this team and the European Championships of 2016 will be a much better guide of whether we are capable of going far in future tournaments.

It's not all over (quite) yet

Unlike Spain, England still have a chance to qualify for the knockout stages in Brazil if results go their way.

Providing the Italians can do us a favour by beating Costa Rica, then there will still be a chance of making the second round.

So let's all pray that Pirlo and company can do the job and that Fulham's Bryan Ruiz and Costa Rica can't pull off another upset otherwise about 7pm this evening we'll be in the same boat as the Spanish.
