AFC Wimbledon are calling on the club's supporters to boost their campaign to build a stadium in Wimbledon and return to the club's original home.

Despite the Dons' initial planning application receiving unanimous approval from the local planning authority, Boris Johnson has taken the decision to 'call-in' the club's plans for further scrutiny.

Subsequently the planning application will be determined by whichever candidate is successful in the election for a new London Mayor on May 5.

Wimbledon are looking to increase their chances of approval by asking fans to email Sadiq Khan and Zac Goldsmith with a simple message - “Please support AFC Wimbledon's plans for a new stadium in Plough Lane” - as well as sending their name and postal address.

The club are hoping that these emails will highlight that public opinion is in favour of Wimbledon moving away from Kingsmeadow and returning to Wimbledon.

Wimbledon are looking to build a 20,000-seater stadium, leisure centre and 602 flats in Plough Lane in a bid to return to their spiritual home having left in 1991.

Vision for the future: AFC Wimbledon's plans for Plough Lane

Wimbledon first handed in outline plans back in September 2013 and stepped up their bid to return to their spiritual home by submitted the next set of documents in November 2014.

They were given the green light to formally submit the proposal when a report by an independent inspector confirmed the Plough Lane side was suitable for “Sporting Intensification”.

A number of revisions were made to the plans in the summer and the proposal has been subject to two rounds of statutory consultation.

This resulted in around 7,000 responses to the consultation, with more than 75 per cent of respondents living in the London Boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth stating their support for the application.

According to the Mayor’s office, the decision to call in the plans was made due to strategic planning matters regarding transport, housing, sports and cultural provision.
