Neal Ardley will try to add at least one more defender to his AFC Wimbledon squad before the transfer window slams shut in just over a fortnight's time.

The Dons back four, who have conceded six goals in the first two games of the season, has been hit by the departure of Ryan Sweeney to Stoke City and an injury to Jon Meades .

And while manager Ardley admits he needs to strengthen at the back, he is wary of loan deals and may opt for a permanent capture instead.

He said: “We need to add more, we've only got five fit defenders. Obviously we've lost Ryan Sweeney, and Jon Meades has got a bad ankle, and they have come right at the same time two days before the season started, so we've not had time to adjust.

Injured: Jon Meades

“It's a difficult one as we're right in the throes of it, and if you want to get someone in on loan they expect them to play, and ultimately that might not be the case initially. We can't guarantee that as we've got a strong back four now.

“Other players who are out there may not have had a pre-season if they haven't got a club. It's a bit of a Catch 22, but we're trying our best to find the right solution at short notice.

“That's all we need though as we've got four good forwards and really good options in midfield. If we can get Meadsy fit and get another one in we'll have good cover at the back too.”

Ardley yesterday told his Dons defenders they need to tighten up at the back as mistakes will be punished more in League One.
