A young cricketer from Uxbridge has been shortlisted for Amateur Player of the Year at the Asian Cricket Awards 2014.

Bilal Mohammed, who plays for Uxbridge CC U15/U17s and Surrey CCC U15s, will find out if he is a winner at the awards ceremony at Lord's on Tuesday (October 7).

The Year 11 Uxbridge High School student took part in the ECB Under 15 National Finals this summer, where he helped Surrey reach the final with a match winning knock of 64.

Cricket at Uxbridge High school has progressed significantly over the last few years with all year groups competing both locally and regionally, and strong links with both Uxbridge CC and Hayes CC.

Ben Isherwood, curriculum Leader for boys’ PE, said: “I am delighted for Bilal on his success, and that he has been recognised in this way. I hope he can inspire young people into sport and wish him the best of luck.”

Hitting out: Mohammed in typical action

Primarily a steady-headed, and at times aggressive, opening batsman, Mohammed has dominated the youth cricket scene in Middlesex this year, scoring 421 runs at an average of 70.17 at U15 level for Uxbridge CC, while playing above his age group at U17 level, he scored 312 runs at an average of 44.57.

He has also been a significant player for Eastcote CC in the Middlesex County League, where he has opened the batting for its first and second teams at the age of 15, and averaging 40.

Mohammed, who also took part in ECB Talent Testing sessions at Loughborough University last year, has also seen improvement in his bowling since last year.

Although mainly a batsman, he has learnt that the modern game demands cricketers to be complete all-rounders, and has demonstrated the development of his leg-spin bowling by picking up wickets and bowling economically in his T20 matches. His bowling economy rate has been well under a run-a-ball.

He said “I feel honoured to have been nominated for this award. It’s a good feeling when I’m representing Uxbridge High, and hopefully I can bring the trophy to the school.”
