It was at Edgbaston 21 months ago the mercurial left-hander last past three figures in the four-day game since when runs have been hard to come by.

Last season was one to forget for Malan, while this term so far he is the king of the cameos with four 30s in five knocks.

However, he heads north to Birmingham to face Warwickshire this weekend feeling in a good place with his game and sensing a big score may not be far away.

He said: “I’m feeling as good as I’ve ever felt at the crease it is just not showing in the scorebook yet. Hopefully that is going to change if you keep doing the right things eventually it is going to happen.

“I quite like the wicket at Edgbaston, so it’s obviously nice to go back to grounds where you feel confident or are happy playing and hopefully the way I’m seeing it and hitting it at the moment can translate into another 100 and we can beat those guys.”

While volume of runs has eluded him, Malan was able to play his part in Middlesex’s historic win over Yorkshire this week.

He made 35 in the second innings pursuit of 472, sharing a stand of 76 for the second wicket with double centurion Chris Rogers.

He knows bigger contributions are required, but feels unlike 2013 he is playing a part in the team’s progress.

He added: “From a personal point of view it is a bit disappointing to get four 30s in five innings – four starts where you have done the hard work and not cashed in.

“So I’m not happy with the amount of runs I’m scoring but I’m happy with the way I’m scoring them.

“However, I’d rather be scoring 30-35 every innings and contributing towards the team than scoring single figures.

“At least if you score 30 plus you are making a contribution and having a meaningful partnership with someone out there which takes time out of the game and pushes it forward for the team.”

Both teams will show changes from their respective wins last week because of international call ups.

England’s one-day international with Scotland will deprive the Bears of Ian Bell and Chris Woakes with Eoin Morgan missing for Middlesex.

Tim Murtagh will be on Ireland duty alongside Warwickshire’s William Porterfield.
