Chris Rogers has called on Middlesex to suck up all the self-belief they can from yesterday’s historic win over Yorkshire.

Rogers took all the headlines for his unbeaten 241 as the tenants of Lord’s chased down 472 to win – the highest run chase made by Middlesex at the Home of Cricket.

However, personal accolades aside the Australian left-hander and Seaxes’ skipper says beating his own and many other people’s title favourites should give Gus Fraser’s men masses of confidence for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “Who knows what the chase is going to do for us, but to beat Yorkshire is a big thing.

“We lost to them twice last year and they are an exceptionally good side. I still think they are almost my tip for the title, so to beat them is going to prove to us that we can beat anyone and that is as important as anything.

The 36-year-old left hander is no stranger to run making, scoring in excess of 21,000 of them in his career with yesterday’s latest milestone carrying his first-class average to the magical 50-mark.

There have now been 10 scores in excess of 200 and four centuries in the baggy green of Australia of which he is rightly proud.

Even so there was something about this occasion at Lord’s which topped the lot for the man known to everyone affectionately as ‘Buck.’

“I think it is probably the greatest innings I have hit,” he added.

“There has been a couple of good ones, but in a fourth innings to play like that and get a win that doesn’t happen every day, so that is what kept driving me and to get over the line and still be there was pretty special.”
