Playing the Ashes at home does seem to help England - but only a little.

Of the 34 Ashes series to be held in England, the home side has won 17 (50 per cent) to Australia's 14 (41%), while three ended in draws.

When the tournament is played on the other side of the world, England have won just 14 (again 41%) to Australia's 18 (53%), with two matches ending in draws.

The difference is more pronounced though when you just look at the last 20 tournaments.

England have won twice as many Ashes series at home as they have in Australia during that time - six compared to three - a win ratio of 60%.

Who will win the Ashes this summer?

It's a similar trend for Australia too who have won seven of the last 10 series in Australia and just four of the last 10 in England.

With this apparent home advantage it's perhaps no surprise that the home team tends to win more matches than the away side.

The home side win an average of 1.95 of matches whilst the away side in an average of 1.5 matches.

However, in Ashes series held in England there's no difference between the average number of matches won by the home and away sides - 1.4.

In Australia the home team win an average of 2.5 matches to the away team's 1.7.
