A study looking at the cost of storing a bicycle at properties in Hammersmith and Fulham has revealed just how much of a dent it is making in people's incomes.

It shows cyclists pay £37.05 per month for the space of housing a full size bike.

The report was carried out by Ealing-based folding bike manufacturers Brompton Bicycle using purchase price data from property website Zoopla and The Mayor of London’s office data on London rents.

It analysed the average purchase price and the average rental cost in Hammersmith and Fulham to calculate the cost of keeping a bike within the property, usually within a hallway or on a balcony.

As well as showing the average amount a Hammersmith and Fulham cyclist spends per month on the space on storage, the report also reveals the space needed to store one full-size bike accounts for around £14,316.50 of the average purchase price of a house in the borough.

The calculations are based on averages, and the price discrepancies between different areas of London lead to some predictable results.

Covent Garden is the most expensive area to rent the space to keep a bike at £111 per month, with Westminster a close second on £106.

The cheapest places to store bikes in rented accommodation are Abbey Wood at £22, Thamesmead at £23.60 and Plumstead at £24 per month.

When it comes to purchasing flats, the most expensive place to be using up square footage to store a bicycle is Kensington and Chelsea where £27,532 of the average purchase price will go on the bike's space.

The most cost effective region for cycling commuters to store their bikes indoors is Barking and Dagenham where £4,521 buys you the space you need to store a bike.
