A fire broke out in the roof of a property in Marylebone undergoing refurbishment.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters helped put out the blaze in Great Portland Street at around lunchtime on Friday (April 17).

With smoke pouring into the sky, emergency services received 35 emergency calls to the fire.

They arrived at the scene just after 12.20pm and had the situation under control in an hour.

The fire was in the lift motor room at the top of the building, and 16 construction staff had left the building before firefighters from Soho, Paddington and Kentish Town arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
