Smoke could be seen billowing from near the future home of AFC Wimbledon for miles around as 35 firefighters tackled a rubbish blaze.

The fire had started at the disused Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, in Plough Lane, at around midday on Tuesday (May 2).

A total of six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to the scene at a storage yard behind the currently-empty stadium.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade (LFB) said: "A pile of waste was alight.

"Smoke from the fire was highly visible across the local area and the brigade’s 999 control officers took more than 10 calls to the incident."

The former dog track was closed in March this year, to make way for AFC Wimbledon's new 20,000-seater ground on the site of the club's spiritual home.

It took the fire brigade nearly two-and-a-half hours to control the blaze after receiving calls at around 12.30pm. Officers confirmed the fire was under control at 3pm.

Crews from Wimbledon, Tooting, Wandsworth and Battersea stations attended the incident.

LFB said the cause of the fire was now under investigation.
