A garden maintained by a charity and local volunteers has won a top award ahead of the likes of The Natural History Museum.

The Westway Trust wildlife garden was named best wildlife garden in the Royal borough’s Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme.

The garden, close to the Westway Sports and Fitness Centre near Crowthorne Road, was set up in the 1990s and is maintained by five gardeners from the Trust and volunteers. It now features a bug hotel, solitary bee house, bird boxes, a hedgehog house, stag beetle house and wildlife pond.

Colin Ellis is the Westway Trust grounds and gardens manager. He said: “Westway Trust maintains more than three acres of green spaces for community use including gardens at Portobello Green and Maxilla walk as well as flower beds all around the Westway and a children’s adventure playground.

“We try to make them great spaces for the people of North Kensington to experience some greenery and relaxation.

“This is a fantastic honour and a great recognition of the hard work put in by our gardeners and volunteers.”

The Brighter Kensington and Chelsea scheme was started in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Its objective is to add green lustre to Kensington and Chelsea borough and to make it as green and colourful as possible.
