Fire crews tackled a blaze at a house in Westminster during the early hours of Monday morning (October 30).

The resident of the house in Victoria Square called London Fire Brigade at 00.46am after the smoke alarm was set off.

She then left the property before firefighters arrived on scene and was treated by London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital as a precaution.

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters from Chelsea , Lambeth and Soho, tackled the fire.

Watch manager Steve Hockin, who was at the scene, said the fire was under control by 2am.

"On arrival the ground floor and first floor of the property were well alight with flames coming out of the door and windows," he said.

"Crews worked extremely hard to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring properties.

"Yet again smoke alarms alerted a resident who then dialled 999.

"Everyone should have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of their home.

"This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."

Half of the ground and first floors were damaged by the fire and the second and third floors of the four-storey property were also damaged by the fire.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the blaze.
