The deluge of leaves falling onto Westminster roads will be bagged and turned into energy, the council say.

Over a thousand tonnes of leaves will fall in the borough and be collected before the end of the year. Once swept and bagged they will be turned into energy, generating an estimated 530,000kwh of power.

And in case you’re wondering how much 530,000kwh of power is, it...

  • Can power 4.4million hours of TV
  • Run 1,262 dishwashers for a year
  • Can power 1.9m computers
  • Air condition 192,727 square metre per annum

Over 200,000 bags will be needed to collect the annual autumnal avalanche from the streets during the Westminster City Council leafing plan, which came into effect on November 2 and is expected to last eight weeks.

It sees 11 extra operatives and two waste collection vehicles deployed, with high leaf fall a particular issue across most of Maida Vale .

Cllr Melvyn Caplan, Westminster City Council cabinet member for city management and customer services, said: “Every day Westminster City Council clears a huge number of leaves from our streets, pavements and parks. However, all too quickly the trees deposit even more.

“People would be absolutely amazed if they realised just how many leaves fall on our streets every autumn.”
