A £1 billlion extension to Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush has been given the final green light.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has rubber stamped plans which include over £20 million in contributions to community developments and projects including 162 affordable housing units out of 1,347 homes, with the potential to go up to 250 affordable if surplus cash is generated.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, gave final approval to the scheme on May 29 but plans for where the community money was going were only given the thumbs up on Friday (September 5), meaning building can finally start.

The 1.6 million sq ft shopping centre in White City will now be home to a 230,000 sq ft flagship John Lewis department store and will include space for restaurants, cafes, offices and leisure facilities.

Plans agreed on Friday mean Westfield will also provide £12.25m to support infrastructure and development in neighbouring White City and beyond with a focus on improvements to education, skills and public spaces.

An extra £600,000 will go towards supporting jobs and training, including the provision of an enhanced ‘work zone’ facility for the council.

Westfield has committed £7m to support transport improvements, including rail infrastructure, increased bus capacity and road improvements.

The company will also develop openly accessible amenity spaces to ensure neighbouring developments are integrated.
