A locksmith has issued advice to homeowners after Greenford was named the 13th most popular burglary spot in the UK.

The area in Ealing recorded a figure of 41.6 burglary insurance claim rates per 1,000 quotes over the past five years, following a study by price comparison site MoneySuperMarket.

Figures were drawn by the site using information from quotes, where each person is asked if they have made a burglary claim in the past five years, before using postcodes to draw a map of claims across the UK.

Redbridge in London was highest with a figure of 54.7 per 1,000 people.

Following the release of the figures, The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) issued advice to homeowners on how to stay safe.

Dr Steffan George, development director of the Master Locksmiths Association, has issued advice to home owners

Steffan George, development director of the Master Locksmiths Association, said: "It’s easy to let security slip to the back of your mind when you are rushing around, but following a few simple tips will help improve your home security.

"Firstly, make sure to check all doors and windows are locked before leaving your property - it sounds straightforward but one of the most common issues we see is people not properly locking UPVC doors.

"Remember to lift the handle and turn the key to lock.

"Check locks and windows regularly to make sure they are in good repair, and if in doubt contact your local MLA approved locksmith who can review your home security and offer advice.

"Many MLA approved locksmiths will be able to perform a complete security assessment of your home free of charge."

Further advice includes always ensure homes are properly secured before leaving and checking all doors and windows, including garage doors, are locked.

CCTV is also recommended for peace of mind, which can be monitored over the internet or on a mobile phone.
