It may be unlucky for some, but a school in Hounslow is celebrating after being named Britain's 13th best non-selective secondary state school.

St Mark's Catholic School, in Bath Road, Hounslow, was 23rd overall in the annual Sunday Times Schools Guide, published on November 22.

It leapt 10 places when selective schools were taken out of the equation in the table, which is compiled using a combination of GCSE and A level results, making it the top ranked school in Hounslow.

Headteacher Paul Enright said: "We were delighted to be recognised as the 13th best comprehensive school in the country in the recent Sunday Times Schools Guide.

"This table takes into account both A Level and GCSE results and our high ranking is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all our students, staff and parents."

Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, near Holland Park, in Kensington & Chelsea , was the highest ranked state school in west London, in fifth spot.

JFS in Harrow was 11th, making it west London's highest ranked comprehensive school, and St Marylebone CofE School, in Marylebone High Street, was 14th.
