A CHARITY for people who are homeless or on the breadline is calling on kindhearted cooks to run fundraising bake sales.

City harvest, which supplies food and other essentials to organisations across west London, including foodbanks, Broadway homeless hostels based in Hanwell and Shepherd’s Bush, Acton Homeless Concern , and The Upper Room in Hammersmith – has bags of cake mix but needs the public’s help to turn them into delicious treats.

The charity needs to raise £15,000 to cover the cost of a van and its insurance and have collected about a third of that so far.

Co-ordinator Mark Harvey said: “We’re here to make a difference, to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by saving perfectly good food and to get food out to people who need it, either because they are homeless or because they are struggling on low incomes. We hire a van on Tuesdays and Thursdays but if we had our own we would be able to operate seven days a week."

City Harvest works across London to collect unneeded food and other essentials such as toiletries, and distributes them to the homeless and charities. The charity operates from two small warehouses in Ladbroke Grove and Brent Cross and will deliver the cake mix and pick up donations. Mr Harvey said: We’d like to hear from anyone who can help: schools, churches, charities, any group that can get together to try to make a difference.”

In August the charity handed out more than 1,000kg of unwanted potatoes in Acton.
