The summer has been a mixed bag of everything from scorching heatwaves to torrential downpours - and even snow.

But with autumn now upon us, The Weather Network has revealed its prediction for what the next three months have in store.

Luckily September looks to be drier than average, with high pressure dominating at times, bringing some settled weather and a bit of an Indian summer.

The forecaster advises people to make the most of the clement conditions, however, because typically changeable weather patterns are predicted to dominate October and November.

These months are expected to yield above average rainfall and below average temperatures throughout most of the country.

This is all down to a strengthening jet stream, which often happens going into October, bringing the UK its typical wet and windy autumnal weather.

But a particularly strong jet stream is expected this year due to the pattern of sea surface temperatures out in the North Atlantic.

Frequent spells of wet and windy weather are likely to affect the UK through these months as deep areas of low pressure are steered towards the country by the jet stream.

Western areas may well see the wettest weather with rainfall likely to be above average, while things in the east expected to be closer to the norm for this time of year.

Temperatures will generally be around or slightly below average through autumn as a whole, again thanks to the cooler than normal sea temperatures out in the Atlantic.

The Weather Network said: “We often get a late taste of summer in early season with some fine and warm spells at times and this year is no different with September shaping up to be drier than average.

"Unfortunately this won’t last as wet and cool conditions will dominate throughout October and November, particularly in western areas of the UK, due to the strengthening jet stream.”

The rest of Europe is expected to be generally warmer and wetter than average, especially across the Mediterranean basin.
