Hounslow Police has provided reassurance to the borough ahead of the closure of Chiswick Police Station's front counter on Thursday (December 14).

Speaking to getwestlondon, Chief Inspector Wayne Matthews said the force is "not withdrawing from anything" and is "still doing everything" it can to keep local residents safe.

The closure of the Chiswick site will leave two remaining stations in the borough , in Hounslow and Feltham , with neighbouring stations Acton and Twickenham also remaining open.

"We're not withdrawing from anything and I just want to give the public the reassurance that we are still here for them," said CI Matthews, of Neighbourhood Policing with Hounslow Borough.

He added: "We are still doing everything we can to keep them safe and this is actually a good thing because what we are doing is trying to react better and give the public what they want."

In November, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced the closure of 37 police stations across London due to cuts to funding, with the force making more than £600 million of savings in recent years.

CI Matthews is urging residents to report crime online.

"We know now that the majority of people want to contact us in other ways, they want to do it when it's convenient for them," he said.

There will be more officers on the streets of Hounslow following the closure of Chiswick's front counter

"People are embracing technology more and more now.

"We are improving our systems to make it easier for people to report."

He added: "You no longer need to go into a police station and actually speak to a police officer directly.

"If you want to do that, that facility will still be there."

He said those who may struggle to use technology will still be able to speak to the police by calling the non emergency number, 101, or 999 in an emergency.

The closure comes as Sadiq Khan warned police officer numbers could fall to dangerous lows of 26,900 by 2021.

Despite this, following the closure of Chiswick Police Station, members of the public will be seeing more boots on the ground as officers make use of hubs in public places.

CI Matthews explains: "The community can go, have that face-to-face interaction with their local, dedicated ward officer which again, will give people more reassurance, more contact, and it will allow the dedicated ward officers to also get a better intelligence picture as well."

He added: "The closure of the station office frees up officers because at the minute we have to put police officers in the station office to deal with the public inquires.

"So by closing the station offices I can immediately put those staff members on the street."

To report a crime online, head to the Metropolitan Police website .

Metropolitan Police can also be contacted over the phone on 101 in a non emergency situation, or on 999 in an emergency.
