Brent has put itself forward to become London's 2020 Borough of Culture and win more than £1 million funding to develop cultural activities across the borough.

Brent council announced its bid on September 5 and has launched a website dedicated to the campaign.

The competition was introduced by London Mayor Sadiq Khan in July 2017 and titles, for both London Borough of Culture 2019 and 2020 are up for grabs.

The winners will be chosen for their artistic vision and ambition to deliver "outstanding cultural initiatives" in their local area.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said: “Brent has hosted iconic and memorable moments like Live Aid and Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday concert but we are so much more than the events at Wembley Stadium or Wembley Arena.

"Important though these venues are Brent is bursting with culture from grassroots groups who have chosen Brent as their home.

He added: "We have music, dance, theatre, art and food from all corners of the globe right on our doorstep and I am truly excited to see how local people want our bid to evolve.”

Brent residents are being encouraged to back Brent's bid and share their selfies and videos from cultural events in the area.

Sadiq Khan said: "Culture is the DNA of our city, it has the power to transform communities and to bring people closer together.

"Now, more than ever, there is a pressing need to reach out to our neighbours and celebrate London’s unique and diverse culture.

"London Borough of Culture is a great way to do just that whilst showing the world that our cultural gems extend way beyond the centre of the capital to all corners of the city."
