Criminals have extra cause to be wary of Hounslow's newest police officer - who is a black belt in tae kwon do.

PC Paul Finnegan, who passed his probation on Saturday (July 30), took up the martial art when he was 15 and was still in his teens when he reached the highest level.

The 25-year-old joined the Heston West neighbourhood team in November 2014 but luckily for the borough's crooks has never needed to display his prowess at blocking, kicking and chopping while on the beat.

However, he says knowing he has it in the locker is a source of fortitude when dealing with potential hairy situations.

"I was never that confident as a child and taking up tae kwon do really boosted my self-belief," he said.

"Luckily I've never had to use it as a police officer but it is nice to know I have it as a back-up."
