A walking and cycling competition is returning to Hounslow after participants racked up nearly 40,000 miles last time around.

Beat the Street, which rewards people for walking and cycling, will be staged in Isleworth from Wednesday February 24 to Wednesday April 13.

Competitors collect points for travelling under their own steam between 'beat boxes' attached to lamp posts, where they tap in and out using cards.

Prizes are awarded to the schools and individuals clocking up the most miles.

The challenge was previously held in Cranford , Heston and Feltham last October and November, where those taking part walked 39,286 miles between them - the equivalent of circling the globe more than one and a half times.

More than 11,000 people took part and St Lawrence's RC Primary School, in Feltham, was crowned the winner .

Councillor Ed Mayne, Hounslow Council's cabinet member for public health and leisure, said: "We're very excited that Beat the Street is returning to the borough. It's a fun initiative, which will help local people get more active and to explore.

"Walking just half an hour a day to work, school or to the shops is a great way for people to improve their health, quality of life and wellbeing."

Pupils from Isleworth Town Primary School helped launch the latest challenge, which is run by Intelligent Health on behalf of Hounslow Council .

The free contest is open to anyone. Cards are being handed out to schoolchildren and are also available at GP surgeries, leisure centres and libraries across Isleworth.

The challenge was set up to encourage people to walk and cycle more, reducing the number of cars on the road and helping residents keep fit.
