The Daily Mirror offered England fans the chance to experience the thrill of penalties in the world’s first digital shoot out earlier today.

Players logged on via Mirror.co.uk and were able to control a state-of-the-art football machine from their desktop, tablet or smartphone which aims and fires balls at the keepers in real-time.

The penalties were taken at non-league Wembley FC with semi-professionals in goal.

In the run up to the event, the Mirror (which is a sister title to getwestlondon) was asking readers to vote on which goalkeeper they do not want England to come up against in Brazil. Germany’s Manuel Neuer and Belgium’s Hibaut Courtois topped the list.

To mark the occasion, those wanting to boast or commiserate publicly will receive a replay of their goal on YouTube to share with friends and family.

Shane Davison, Mirror’s Head of Marketing: "We are excited to bring the world’s first fully-automated football machine to life. Our readers - whether they're at their desktop, on their mobile or tablet - now have a chance to take a click and score a real penalty against our biggest goalkeeping nemesis, Neuer."
