Drivers have been faced with travel chaos today (May 8) after a vehicle fire on the A40 led to closures of the eastbound carriageway.

At around 6pm on Sunday (May 7), a vehicle caught fire on the A40 Western Avenue between A4180 West End Road, Polish War Memorial, and A312 Church Road, Target Roundabout.

The road was closed overnight for emergency road resurfacing and one lane out of three re-opened for morning rush hour.

The single-file traffic meant commuters were warned about hour-long delays in west London earlier today.

One driver suggested traffic was "stationary from Hillingdon" and another said she had moved around one mile in an hour.

Long delays and congestion were affecting drivers back to the M40 at J1, Denham Roundabout.

The traffic nightmare continued throughout the morning as, at 11am, the A40 Western Avenue eastbound was said to be closing.

The emergency road resurfacing is continuing and it is not yet certain when the road will be completely reopened.

However, one lane is open again and drivers have been warned about delays of around one hour and forty minutes.
