An Uxbridge College student has been awarded for her hard work after she was offered a place at university to study criminology just four years after she moved to Britain from Pakistan.
At an award ceremony held on Thursday (September 15), featuring the international hurdler Julz Adeniran as a special guest, students were acknowledged for their efforts.
Zanib Shahid joined Uxbridge College in 2012 after recently moving to the country with very little spoken or written English and very few qualifications.
After her four years studying business courses alongside maths and English, the 20-year-old now has equivalent of A levels and will be going on to university.
Principal of the college, Laraine Smith OBE, said: “[It was] a wonderful celebration of the successes of our students, our employer partners and the college as a whole. Congratulations to everyone.
“For our students we had a chance to recognise their many achievements, including their academic and vocational achievements, which are often come by despite many challenges.”#
Julz Adeniran, an Olympic hopeful hurdler, presented the awards at the Beck Theatre in Hayes .
He also spoke of his journey to becoming an athlete, and of his devastation when his 2016 Olympic hopes were spoiled by a broken Achilles tendon.
Ms Smith added: “Julz was a real inspiration to everyone and made the evening really special and I'd like to say a big thank you to him for coming along.”
