An Uxbridge couple were treated to a lovely surprise when they arrived at a local pub thinking they were celebrating their granddaughters birthday, only to find it was actually a surprise anniversary party.

John and Gloria Kay will be marking their Diamond anniversary on Thursday, December 22 after the surprise party at The Malt Shovel pub in Iver Lane on Sunday (December 11).

The pair were invited to the pub to celebrate their granddaughter Kirsty Pradda's birthday but were amazed when the family shouted 'surprise' and revealed it was actually a party to celebrate their marriage.

Ms Pradda, 33, said: “Nan and granddad were both in shock when we shouted 'surprise' when they walked in as they thought they were coming to celebrate my birthday with me.

“They have always done so much for the family so it was nice to be able to do something for them.

“Lots of happy tears were shed – they really are one in a million and we are so proud of them.

“60 years of marriage is such an achievement.”

Mr Kay, 82, and Mrs Kay, 79, were married in a church in Willesden on December 22, 1956 before they moved into a flat in that area.

Around 11 months later they moved to a three bedroom house in Long Lane, Hillingdon where they raised three children – Loraine , Bev and Jason.

Grandsons James and Lewis also work there.

In the 1980s, Gloria also owned a children's clothing store and toy shop in Crescent Parade Hillingdon, called Gee's.
