A petition from Uber to Sadiq Khan received more than 470,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

The petition calls for the Mayor to step in and "reverse the decision to ban Uber in London".

The popular app revolutionised the private hire cab industry, allowing smartphone users to hail a cab nearby to any destination, pay for it through their debit cards and track their journeys on their phone.

The company has been hit by allegations of drivers committing crimes and sexual assaults as well as criticism for their lack of criminal background checks.

The company has also undergone criticism for its treatment of its drivers and was set to be taken to an employment tribunal by one of the drivers later this month.

TfL announced on Friday (September 22) that it would not be renewing Uber's private hire licence beyond the end of the month.

The firm was originally granted a five-year licence when London operations began in June 2012, which the Mayor and chairman of TfL, Sadiq Khan renewed until the end of September while he considered a longer licence period.

TfL's decision notice cited the company's "approach to reporting serious criminal offences and approach to how Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are obtained" among the reasons for the decision.

The petition calls for the Mayor to reconsider and points out that the app has 3.5 million users in the capital as well as 40,000 licensed drivers who will lose their jobs at the end of the month at very short notice.

Within an hour of the decision, Uber had emailed its London users asking them to sign the petition.
