Uber's appeal against the decision not to renew its operating licence could take years, the Mayor of London said on Thursday (November 16).

Speaking at mayor's question time, Sadiq Khan told London Assembly members: “My understanding is that [the appeal] could go on for a number of years.”

City Hall heard the case could possibly end up in the Supreme Court, but the taxi-hailing app would first appear in a magistrates' court early next year.

Uber's licence expired in October but drivers can continue to operate in London during the appeal process.

The mayor's announcement comes nearly two months since Uber was stripped of its private hire operating licence by Transport for London .

Its licence was not renewed amid concerns for passenger safety.

On Friday (November 10), the world-famous company lost an employment rights challenge following an employment appeal tribunal in central London.

The tribunal ruled against the private hire firm's challenge, which was described by Britain's general trade union as a “landmark victory” for gig economy workers' rights.
