A union is demanding all London Underground stations are staffed immediately after a person narrowly missed being hit by a train at Ruislip station.

The plea comes after a young person jumped from the platform of the Metropolitan and Piccadilly Line station onto the tracks on Friday (October 20).

It was only thanks to the driver’s quick reactions that he was able to bring his train to an emergency stop - preventing the youth from being hit.

It has since emerged that the young person had accessed the track previous to this incident and was witnessed playing around near the platform edge with friends, according to union RMT.

The transport union is seriously concerned that the driver had to deal with the whole incident alone, as "near miss" incidents can have a "profound impact on drivers".

Mick Cash, RMT General Secretary, said: "Another day, another unstaffed station, another serious incident.

"London Underground needs to get an urgent grip on unstaffed stations – the appalling station jobs cut programme known as Fit for the Future continues to leave an unsafe legacy of daily unstaffed stations.

“Whilst RMT have had a major victory in getting 325 jobs back, unstaffed stations are still a regular occurrence.

"If stations can’t be staffed, they must be closed. It’s only a matter of time before a fatality occurs."

A union wants staff at ALL tube stations

The union believes that had Ruislip station been staffed at the time, police and other authorities would have been summoned far earlier to "prevent it from escalating to a life-risking incident".

Transport for London (TfL) says it has staff at all stations and staff rostered for shifts covering all hours that a station operates.

At small above-ground stations, such as Ruislip, a station maybe left unstaffed temporarily if staff are not available for short periods due to sickness or other unplanned circumstances "on rare occasions", TfL claims.

Nigel Holness, London Underground’s director of network operations, said: "Safety is our top priority and fortunately these types of incidents are very rare.

"Following a review of staffing levels we are well underway with our process of putting 325 additional new staff members in our stations.

"We will continue to monitor the level of staffing across our network to ensure that our customers are kept safe and receive the best possible level of service and assistance at all times."
