Harmondworth and Sipson residents paid moving tributes to Heathrow Airport campaigner Bryan Sobey after the 87-year-old died following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
The former chairman and later President of the Harmondsworth and Sipson Residents Association spent almost 50 years with wife Ann to keep the community concerns heard in Hillingdon before Bryan moved to Gloucestershire after his wife's death .
Chairman of Hayes Town Partnership David Brough said Bryan was "a true gentleman and an inspiration".
Mr Brough became acquainted with Bryan whilst answering letters as a junior committee clerk for Hillingdon Council.
Speaking of their contribution to the villages, he said: "I admired both of them for the persistent and resolute way they defended their community with unfailing courtesy and passion.
"His and Ann's work is uniquely recognised in the stained glass window that the council arranged to have installed in St Mary's Church in Harmondsworth after Ann's death in 2008."
'A huge loss'
Their near half century of service is unique in the history of Hillingdon Borough and the leader of the council has indicated his strong support for the creation of a permanent memorial in recognition of their work.
Former neighbour Asha Thaker added it was a huge loss for all those who knew him, particularly after his campaign work inspired many to take up a more active role in the community.
Ms Thaker said: "Ann and Bryan were two people who fought for what others wanted to do for the villages, but weren't brave enough or determined enough. "
The veteran anti Heathrow Airport third runway campaigner was a driving force behind the No Third Runway Action Group (NTRAG) and featured on television several times speaking on behalf of those in the area.
Bryan's funeral is to be held at Westerleigh Crematorium in Gloucestershire on April 18.
