Commuters vented their frustration as signal failures crippled the Central line on Thursday (May 26) morning, causing travel chaos.

Transport for London (TfL) said an earlier signal failure in the East Acton area was causing severe delays across the entire line.

It said tickets were being accepted on local buses, Chiltern Railways and Abellio Greater Anglia train services as it attempted to fix the problem.

The delays prompted a storm of outrage from passengers on Twitter , who complained of long waits and overcrowding.

Rich Harvey tweeted to say the line was dangerously overcrowded, adding "maybe some staff on the platforms stopping the crush might be useful".

Others appeared unsurprised by the problems, like Nupur Patel, who tweeted: "Central line never fails to disappoint".

A number of passengers reported emergency alarms adding to the delays, like Hannah (@hannaaahhhhhh), who tweeted: "3 emergency alarms and a signal failure in one morning @centralline sounds realistic."

The parody Twitter account TLF Travel Alerts was able to see the funny side, offering up its own explanation for the delays.

"Delays on the Central Line due to a man reading Infinite Jest and looking around occasionally to make sure girls can see he is doing that," it tweeted.
