Frustrated train passengers caught up in the travel chaos on Thursday (May 5) had their journeys brightened up by on-board quizzes.

South West Trains services in and out of Waterloo were disrupted throughout the day following a fire that morning at Vauxhall train station.

But as commuters struggled with delays and cancellations, many enjoyed some light relief thanks to music quizzes broadcast over the PA system.

Several passengers tweeted their appreciation for the legendary guard on the Waterloo to Shepperton service who tested their knowledge on music ranging from Katrina and the Waves to Simon & Garfunkel.

The travel disruption was caused by a fire at Vauxhall train station

Sarah Phillips tweeted video footage of the quiz on her journey, and wrote: "This guard made our awful journey 1000% better. I salute you sir!"

Rachel Burgess tweeted: "Bravo to @SW_Trains train manager who is doing a quiz to keep spirits up amid a mass of grumpy, frazzled, delayed commuters!"

And Lisa Mainwaring also took to Twitter to express her respect, writing: "Trains are up the spout, but I'm on the funniest train in London. Strawberry Hill train + guard who does the quiz #VeryBritish".

'We hope our passengers enjoyed their special quizzes'

It seems on-board quizzes are not restricted to the Shepperton service, either, with tweets from previous days praising quizzes on the Guildford-Waterloo and Waterloo-Weymouth services.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: "We encourage our guards to make our passengers' journeys as pleasant as possible - including during times of disruption - and we hope the passengers on these services enjoyed their special quizzes while travelling with us."

The train operator has apologised for Thursday's disruption. It said the fire had damaged electrical cables, putting half its lines out of action.

It said services would operate normally on Friday (May 6), when tickets from Thursday would be valid for use by any passengers who were unable to complete their journeys that day.

The guard's services may be required during the next bank holiday weekend, when passengers have been warned to expect major disruption due to engineering work.
