Activists campaigning against air pollution in the capital blockaded Tower Bridge on Monday (October 30).

The demonstration marked the start of a week of "civil disobedience" organised by anti-air pollution campaigning group Stop Killing Londoners.

The protest began shortly after noon when activists marched onto the bridge.

City of London Police were called to the protest shortly after noon and arrested seven people for obstructing a public highway.

Officers cleared the road and it was reopened at 1.25pm.

A City of London Police spokesman said: "We were called to an unplanned demonstration on Tower Bridge shortly after noon on Monday (October 30).

"The demonstration was cleared at 1.25pm and seven people have been arrested for obstruction of a public highway.

"They currently remain in custody, and the roads have fully reopened."

Stop Killing Londoners is planning to carry out further road blocks this week.

Stop Killing Londoners spokesman, George Barda, said: "It remains to be seen how much leverage today's action has but there is more to come, so watch this space.

"We want to force air pollution high enough up the news agenda that it's actually dealt with rather than just talked about.

He added: "Disruption is always unwelcome but without it the status quo tends to continue.

"We want to force the state action that it wants to side step and we don't mind being arrested in the process.

"Even if the people delayed today were upset they will now be having a conversation about a crucial issue they wouldn't have had otherwise."
