Generous Londoners gave more than £13,000 to homeless charity St Mungo’s when it held its Woolly Hat Day appeal.

The annual event on January 29 saw people collecting money for the Shepherd’s Bush based charity at Tube stations throughout the capital.

The money will be added to its Celebrity Hat Auction, which took place during the last week in January, with proceeds from this are still being counted.

This year St Mungo’s is aiming to raise £60,000 from Woolly Hat Day, which would make life-changing differences to homeless people.

The annual Hat Auction saw the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Alan Shearer, Brian May, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Michael Palin and Pete Doherty all contributing their headwear.

Awareness and funds were also raise when homemade hats were sold at a stall Spitalfields Market on Woolly Hat Day.

Despite the amount raised by the auction not being known, the charity said the highest selling hat belonging to Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry, with bids coming in from as far as South Korea.
