More than £3,000 has been raised for Marie Curie and Dementia UK by a group of men who cycled from Leeds to London.

The group of ten men, all from Southall, all lost their fathers to cancer and dementia and called themselves ‘Our Fathers’.

They succeeded in raising £3,307 but hope to raise much more for the worthy causes.

They completed the gruelling 220-mile cycle on Friday (April 3) to be welcomed on their return by MP for Southall Virendra Sharma.

Group organiser Nawal Didi said: “A lot of us involved in this challenge have, or know someone close to us who has, lost a father following a trying episode of cancer or dementia.

"Last September 2014, following the death of my father earlier on in the year, I cycled for Marie Curie and journeyed from Cardiff to London.

“After the event many of my friends and supporters to the cause expressed their desire to get involved to help and wanted to do something themselves so we decided to complete a bigger cycle to raise more money.

“I pray that you may never need this for you or those around you, and I pray for those that have or are going through the pain now and that this has been made easier by the wonderful support of the associated charities as I found for myself.”

After the four-day journey from Leeds, Virendra Sharma welcomed the heroes on their return to Southall.

The MP said: “The journey that these cyclists have made is an extraordinary success. They have raised funds for causes close to their hearts, and indeed have honoured their loved one’s memories.

“Such a commitment to a cause is to be applauded, and I felt honoured to be asked to receive them upon their return to their homes here in Southall.”
