Thick plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away after waste wood caught fire in Uxbridge.

Ten fire engines and more than 70 firefighters battled the burning blaze which saw 4,000 tonnes of waste go up in smoke on New Years Green Lane in Harefield, Uxbridge.

The fire which started at around 6pm on Saturday (October 17) was still being put out on Sunday morning with crews damping down deep seated pockets of fire.

The London Fire Brigade said there were no reported injuries

Station Manager Gareth Cook who was at the scene, said: “Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control, but this is a protracted incident with crews likely to remain at the scene throughout Sunday morning to ensure the fire is completely out.”

Ten fire engines and firefighters from Ruislip, Harrow, Hillingdon, Northolt and other fire stations in the surrounding area attended the incident.

The London Fire Brigade were called at 6.05pm and the fire was under control at 1.48am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
