An Ickenham family are "absolutely fuming" after taking a terminally ill grandmother to have her nails done.

They claim that the nail bar initially refused to give their grandmother a manicure because she was ill, and when they protested she was only given the manicure on the basis that she did not return in future.

The grandmother-of-eight was taken to Pink & White Nails in Swakeleys Road, Ickenham, during a family outing on Tuesday (December 5).

Heather Slade, 66, was diagnosed with cancer in November 2016 and now receives palliative care in Michael Sobell Hospice .

Her son, Timothy, 36, told getwestlondon : "The family took (Heather) to get her nails done as it's something she really enjoys and looks forward to it.

"She didn't know what had happened at the time and had a lovely day.

"My cousin and auntie helped my mum into the nail bar because she needs someone to hold on to while she's walking, then they sat her down on one of the sofas in there.

"My cousin approached the counter to ask for a manicure for my mum.

"This guy just shook his head and said 'no' because she 'won't be able to keep her hands still'.

"She's quite capable of keeping her hands still, but the man then seemed to be concerned about infections. She has cancer!

"He said, 'I'll do it this time but not again'.

"Afterwards I went in and had a go at him and he just kept saying something about infections, and that they 'didn't do disabled or ill people'.

"I was absolutely fuming."

Heather has lived in Ickenham for 40 years and is a much-loved former Breakspear Primary School teacher, Timothy said.

She was diagnosed with cancer in November 2016 and has been given just six months to live; an operation revealed she has a grade 4 glioblastoma.

Heather had enjoyed her nail treatment unaware of what had been said, but the family decided to tell her.

Outraged at the situation, Heather's niece, Stephanie Warner, posted a status on Facebook about the incident on Wednesday (December 6).

Tim added: "I had to tell [Heather] today as I don't like keeping things from her. She was very upset.

"She used to go there a lot when she was healthy.

"She has been an amazing and wonderful woman her whole life and deserves so much better - the family just wanted to spend some quality time together."
