Youngsters are gearing up for a world record attempt to celebrate the Rugby World Cup.

Hundreds of children from schools across Richmond will attempt to smash the record for the biggest ever game of tag rugby in Old Deer Park, Richmond, on October 14.

The current mark, set in Italy, stands at 336 participants.

October's record attempt will be part of the annual schools tag rugby tournament in the borough and Richmond Council's TRY IT festival, held to encourage people to have a go at everything from new sports to music and drama.

Councillor Meena Bond, Richmond Council's cabinet member for sports, said: "The tag rugby world record attempt is a chance for young people to try out rugby, get fit and active, and boost the number of children playing sport Richmond.

"The borough’s residents are among the very fittest in the country. The competitive spirit and keen sporting interest in Richmond’s next generation lives on and I wish them best of luck on the day."

The Rugby World Cup begins on September 18, with the final taking place at Twickenham Stadium on October 31.
